Lumsden is a small country town nestled in the heart of Northern Southland. Even though the town is in the middle of no where, it is suitatied in the perfect spot for all your kiwi must do activites.
A short stone throw away is Queenstown (100km N), Te Anau (78km NW), Invercargill (81km S) and Gore (59km SE).
But dont be disppointed, Lumsden itself has got plently to offer.
Biking
The Around The Mountains Cycle Trail is 186 km worth of cycle trail that goes from Kingston to Walter Peak.
It takes 3-5 relaxing days to complete in any direction and is full of stunning Southland scenery.
Hiking
Not far from Lumsden is a hidden gem - a 27 km (21 km hand built) biking/hiking trail at Welcome Rock, with accommodation with heaps of different tours to suit.
Full of awesome views of the wonderful country side Southland has to offer.
Fishing

Hunting
Theres wicked hunting in The Eyre Mountains. Which is situated just behind Lumsden.

Historical Railways
Lumsden Railway Station is in the very heart of Lumsden and is appartnly one of the best freedom camping spots in Southland. It hosts a number of old carriages, trains and artifacts. which have been donated, restored or even dug out of the flood banks of he near by Oreti River
